BSCI, OEKO-TEX & GRS: Understanding Bag Certifications for Import Compliance

Introduction

Certification gaps are one of the most common and costly compliance failures in bag importing.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Chemical Safety

Tests all components for harmful substances: heavy metals (lead, cadmium), pesticide residues, formaldehyde, pH value, and azo colorants. Three product classes — Class III (no direct skin contact) covers most bag products. Mandatory for EU, UK, Australia, Japan markets. Renewal: annual.

BSCI: Social Compliance for Labor Conditions

amfori BSCI Code of Conduct covers labor rights, health and safety, environmental practices, and business ethics. Audit grades A–E; Grade A or B indicates a well-managed facility. Required by ALDI, Lidl, REWE, Carrefour, and most German and French retail chains. Full audits every 2 years.

GRS: Recycled Content Verification

Global Recycled Standard certifies recycled materials from collection through final product. For RPET bags, tracks PET bottle collection → pellet production → fabric weaving → bag manufacturing. Minimum 20% recycled content for any recycled claim; ≥50% for GRS trademark. Prevents greenwashing enforcement actions.

ISO 9001:2015: Quality Management Systems

Process certification — not a product certification. Demonstrates documented processes, customer focus, and continuous improvement. Important: Do not rely on ISO 9001 alone as evidence of product compliance.
